Curation
It's no wonder the color red is used to indicate "stop." Its powerful hue makes you take notice. The same can be said about this magnificent 6.03-carat ruby, mined from the Montepuez district in Mozambique, known to produce the most superlative rubies. It features a beautiful "pigeon blood red" color, considered the finest and most coveted ruby color. This remarkable color, unenhanced by heat treatment according to Gem Research SwissLab (GRS), is perfectly saturated throughout the stone. The clarity is also exquisite, expertly showcased in a symmetrical oval cut with a large face-up appearance. This ruby is a rare, collector-grade gem waiting for a setting worthy of its regality.

Color Award:
Pigeon Blood Red

Color Award Description:
Macabre, as it sounds, "Pigeon Blood Red" refers to a color category reserved for the finest, high-caliber rubies that exhibit a vibrant and vivid crimson red color. The term is said to have originated in Burma, where locals call the most vivid rubies "ko-twe", meaning "pigeon's blood". It is said that a perfect ruby is the same color as the first two drops of blood from the nose of a freshly-killed pigeon.

Pigeon blood red is the most sought-after color in rubies, surpassed by no other. While these rubies are usually devoid of purplish/pinkish/orangish/brownish overtones, some stones may show a slight purple hue.

While Burma (Myanmar) - particularly the Mogok region - has historically produced the most legendary pigeon blood red rubies, the nomenclature is not exclusive to the country. Other localities that yield fine-quality pigeon blood red rubies include Mozambique, Madagascar, Tanzania, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Vietnam.

Transparency & Clarity

Transparency:
Transparent

Clarity Grade:
Eye-Clean

Clarity Grade Description:
The stone is completely free from eye-visible inclusions

Gemologist's Comments on Clarity:
In most lighting conditions, the clarity of this ruby looks completely eye-clean because the minor inclusions in the stone are masked by the rich color saturation of the stone. However, in strong lighting conditions, some minute inclusions may be seen with the unaided eye on close observation from some angles.

Natural & unheated/untreated rubies over 6 carats that are eye-clean, or even close to eye-clean, are extremely rare.

Fluorescence
Fluorescence is the visible light some gemstones emit when exposed to invisible ultraviolet (UV) rays. We've described below the intensity and color of the gemstone's fluorescence under long-wave UV light (LWUV).

Intensity:
Faint

Color:
Red
