Gemstone, Origin & Treatments

Species:
Natural Corundum

Gemstone & Variety:
Natural Ruby

Geographic Origin:
Mogok - Burma (Myanmar)

Treatments:
Unheated with indications of clarity enhancement with oil

Gemologist's Comments on Treatments:
As a business policy, we don't stock heated, treated, or enhanced gemstones. However, some Burmese rubies invariably come into contact with oil during their life, from mining to cutting/polishing to selling. This is because oil is commonly used as a lubricant for cleaning/storing rough rubies and facilitating the cutting/polishing process.

Also, due to their natural growth conditions and recovery methods, almost all Burmese rubies contain surface-reaching features. Therefore, the oil may seep into these features even when not intended as a treatment.

For this reason, clarity enhancement - particularly with oil - is a common and widely accepted trade practice for Burmese rubies.

While this particular ruby is unheated, indications of clarity enhancement with oil are observed.

Gemologist's Comments on Clarity:
The features seen in the stone's pavilion are naturally occurring rough, unpolished surface areas. When cutting & polishing rubies, it's a common practice to intentionally keep certain portions of the stone in the natural, rough, unpolished form, particularly in the pavilion/bottom of the stone. This is done to preserve the carat weight and maintain the stone's overall shape/symmetry. Such minor external features are commonly seen in most natural & unheated/untreated rubies, especially ones from Burma. Since they are located in the pavilion, they don't affect the stone's clarity, face-up appearance, or luster.
