Some gemstones are distinguished by a single extraordinary quality; this 4.54-carat Kashmir sapphire possesses several that almost never converge in one stone. In more than two decades of working with fine gemstones, it ranks among the finest Kashmir sapphires above four carats that I have encountered.

Its color is immediately arresting: a vivid, velvety blue of remarkable saturation and luminosity, endowed with the rare electric quality for which the finest Kashmir sapphires are so deeply admired. GRS has accorded it the coveted “Royal Peacock Blue” designation, while Lotus Gemology describes it as “Peacock Blue” and has further honored the sapphire as a Gem of Distinction. The characteristic softness of its velvety appearance does not diminish its brilliance; rather, it gives the color a luminous, almost ethereal depth while preserving exceptional life and scintillation.

What elevates this sapphire still further is its near loupe-clean clarity and superb transparency. Such purity is exceedingly uncommon in an untreated Kashmir sapphire of this size, particularly when accompanied by color of this caliber. Its beautifully proportioned rectangular cushion cut releases light with remarkable efficiency, giving the stone vibrant brilliance, crisp scintillation and an imposing yet graceful presence.

Discovered in 1881 in the Zanskar range of the Himalayan mountains in northwest India, the legendary Kashmir sapphires are the most beautiful and treasured of all blue sapphires.

The finest sapphires from Kashmir have a highly saturated color, along with a characteristic "silkiness" or velvety glow that makes them a phenomenon of nature. With the original mines long depleted, Kashmir sapphires are a rare find and among the most prized of all gemstones today.

Velvety Appearance:
This gemstone exhibits an appearance that is classified as "velvety". Such an appearance results from very fine microscopic particles that scatter light, causing the coveted visual effect without negatively affecting the gem's transparency. Gemstones with a velvety appearance have little to no extinction, display a warm glow, and look very pleasing to the eye. Therefore, velvety appearance is considered a highly sought-after trait in gemstones.
